Introduction to Occupy Literature course
On September 17, 2011, a single tweet was sent out that simply invited others to stand up against corporate greed. There was also some simple advice included: "Bring tent." What started as a small group on Wall Street in New York City grew to a world-wide phenomenon. People in America and around the world were finally waking up, making their voices heard, and standing up to corporate greed and big government.
The new Common Core Standards (which have been adopted by 48 of 50 states) emphasizes the need for students to think critically in an ever-changing global community. The goal of this course is to help students learn more about and discuss their duties as a member of a democratic society.
Not since George Orwell's infamous 1984 has a book about "Big Brother" been so well-received by a mass audience. The Hunger Games has the people reading, but are they truly getting the message? Many young adults think that this may just be a work of fiction, but like so many other authors past and present, is it possible that Suzanne Collins' trilogy is based more reality than fiction?
Because of the overwhelming popularity of the Hunger Games series, we will be using these three texts as our core novels for this class. In addition, we will use other fiction and non-fiction texts to facilitate classroom discussion, literature circle groups, projects, and class writing assignments.
